A dream come true: Lei La'i Studio

Passion projects are what keep us all going, and so many of us dream of making our passion projects our full-time focus. While we’ve got our hands full with a ton of things besides Roam (running a family farm and honey business, coordinating weddings, family-life and client projects, to name a few!) we’re moving closer and closer towards the dream with every project we get. The most exciting part of it all is to experience our dreams coming to life alongside dear friends and vendors, who are making their dreams come true, too. And without further adieu, we wanted to celebrate the success of one of our dear friends and collaborator’s newest venture by giving you a sneak peak of her newest venture - Lei La’i Studio!

Lei La’i studio is the newly opened Kailua-based floral studio and event space by the beautiful and talented Pāmakani (you may know her on Instagram as @Ocean_Dreamerr ). We’ve been collaborating with Pomaikani for the past few years on everything from weddings to corporate events, creating some amazing custom floral installations (most recently for Tarte cosmetics) and bringing flower dreams to life for star-eyed brides here on O’ahu.

Pāmakani previously worked from a studio space fashioned at her home, but having this storefront space is going to enable her to bring her craft and gifts to more people, more publically, celebrating Hawai’i’s rich culture and natural beauty with our community in the process. We’re especially excited that the studio will serve as a rentable event space, hosting regular lei making workshops, both public and private. It’s also available for your dreamy occasion photoshoot (or those just-for-fun glamour shots), which are an Ocean Dreamer specialty (hellooooo @hibiskiss.love.tub!)


Lei La’i is open daily from 1-8pm at 438 Uluniu St in Kailua. In addition to an event space, the studio serves as a workspace for Ocean Dreamer floral art and a boutique local gift shop, featuring a rotating selection of locally made products. You’ll find all sorts of goodies and gifts, from hand-woven papale and jewelry, local art prints, to beauty and skincare products. For your floral needs, a flower bar of ready-made bouquets and one-of-a-kind Lei are daily staples. Pāmakani will run the studio with her daughter.


We were excited to help celebrate the studio’s opening by contributing to this photoshoot, providing design and styling support. Pāmakani used her own glorious peacock chair, which is now a regular fixture in the studio (snap a photo in it while you’re there!) but we helped create cozy vibes by bringing in rugs and pillows for this session. If you’re planning an upcoming shoot, between the two of us, we’ve got plenty of blooms, greenery and soft goods to set the ideal mood!


Stop by and say hi to Pāmakani next time you’re in Kailua. You’ll walk away in a better mood guaranteed (and probably with a new treasure to brighten your own day or that of lucky friend.)

A Picture-Perfect 1st Birthday at Moanalua Gardens

A 1st birthday party might be one of the funnest kind of events to design because of the lighthearted whimsey and joy that is guaranteed to abound! For this event, we designed the whole day using inspiration from mama’s pinterest board. We took the opportunity to really get playful with decor, details and setting the atmosphere, making sure there were plenty of scenes where family and friends could capture perfect photos to last a lifetime.


This event was well attended, so we made sure to include all the essential stations, along with some extra special ones to help facilitate the day and create fun activities to keep everyone engaged.

First things first: guests arrived to a super cute sign in station where they could leave messages for Livi, and learn all the housekeeping info for the event in a stylish and non-disruptive way. Even when you hire a professional photographer, we all know everyone is going to be snapping their own photos all day. And we don’t want to miss seeing those, either! Creating an event-specific hashtag is one easy way to gather everyone’s photos together in one spot on different media platforms, whether instagram or facebook. We had this information, along with other event details, in gold frames at the check-in table. This is one cute way to share important information that helps your guests feel at ease and ready to party!


The desert table was the biggest feature of the day, and made a wonderful backdrop for photos (and was naturally the most popular table the party!) To frame the setting, we handcrafted floral letters in the lady of the day’s name and hung them as a backdrop from a beautiful natural wooden arch that was natural to the venue. While we always prefer using live floral, we opted to use faux floral this time so that the letters could be hung in Livi’s bedroom after the party. To the right of the table we had a shelf with hand-cut paper crowns for all the others kids to wear, which matched the cake design too! These ended up being a smash hit for all ages.


And what’s a party without a lounge?! A lounge is one of the easiest ways to create an atmosphere of welcome and relaxation for your guests, and is also the perfect setting for professional photos that will feel natural and at ease. The colors and style of the lounge matched the party theme perfectly, and made little Livi look like the sweetest little princess (peacock chairs are truly magical!).


There are so many other fun things you can do when designing party’s like this one, from detailing table settings, coming up with games and activities for your guests, and creating special decor moments that help your guests connect and share in memories with you. Here are a few more details from this super special day, that’s sure to last in everyone’s mind for years and years to come (and Livi will have the most amazing photos to prove it!).

A Loulu Palm Estate Wedding

Joan and Shaun… where to begin? As both their event designer and coordinator through Bustle Events and their rental company, these two could not be more ideal clients. From the start Joan had a vision of what she wanted the day to look and feel like but wasn’t sure of all the pieces to pull together. I took her inspiration and brought it to life which is where the magic happens…

Loulu Palm Estate was the perfect backdrop for their wedding after doing an initial venue hunt and they loved the backyard views and feelings it provides at the property to offer for their destination guests. Svetlana Sauer’s style captured the emotions and details of the day so much so that we feel like we’re experiencing it all over again every time we look at these photos.

Fun fact: not only is the bride absolutely gorgeous and a bright (she’s a lawyer!), she’s also incredibly artistic! She designed and created all the details of her invitations, menus, and seating cards herself!


And of course, we can always count on Mei Day to provide the perfect florals for every occasion! The subtle pink in the roses provided just the right amount of color and dimension to the florals.


Though simple, the outdoor seating arrangement turned out stunning. All table top decor was rented through Loulu Palm. Their teak dining tables and chairs made for a gorgeous al fresco look.


At the time of their vows the couple wanted to plant a tree together—a special tradition of the Loulu Palm Estate. The planting of the tree together represents their new beginning and their promise to grow and nurture their relationship together.


We’re sure by now you’ve noticed the groom’s unique choice in color for his suit! What can we say? We’re totally for it! Not only does it compliment their whole color scheme perfectly, but it also matches our Emerald Velvet Sofa! We’re love the moments captured with our lounge—it really brought everything to life!

Between you and me, Joan and Shaun were hands down the most grateful and thoughtful couple I’ve yet to work with. They included a handwritten thank you note on each guests name card for traveling from so many places and for the role they played in their life. The night ended with emotional thank you speeches and there was so much love in the atmosphere. If we were indoors, it would have blown the doors off. It’s moments and people like this that fuel and inspire my passion for events and design.
